Children's Head Warmer Pattern

Here is a crochet pattern for a child's size head or ear warmer. It is almost identical to the adult sized pattern but it is a little shorter and more narrow as you can see below.

Materials:
  • Worsted Weight Yarn
  •  Size I Crochet Hook
  •  A button that will fit in between your double crochet stitches
  • Thread and needle
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
ea = each

Note:  First ch 2 counts as dc.

Instructions:

Row 1: ch 6, dc in first 3 chs made, making 4 dc total.

Row 2: ch2, turn. dc in 2nd stitch from hook and each stitch across, including very last st. (5dc)

Row 2 will have 5dc
Rows 3-9: Repeat row 2. This will make an increase per row and you should end up with 12 dc in last row.
Row 10: ch 2, turn. dc in each st across, but NOT the very last st in order to maintain 12 dc.

Rows 11-29: Repeat row 10.

Row 30: ch 2, turn. Skip first st, dc in each st across. (11 dc)

Rows 31-37: Repeat row 30 to continue to decrease. You will have 4 dc in the last row.
Final piece is about 20" long

At this point you could fasten off or you could crochet a border. A simple hdc around looks nice and you could even do it in a contrasting color. Another border stitch I like is the crab stitch, also known as reverse single crochet as seen below.

Crochet Mermaid Tail Fin Pattern

As I said in my previous post, I got the main mermaid tail pattern from this link. It's a free pattern for an infant written in UK crochet terms. If you need any help with the pattern just let me know by leaving a comment below or via email. This pattern is only for the tail fin pictured above.

Materials:
  • Worsted weight yarn or same yarn used for main body
  • Size I hook or same size used for main body
  • Needle for sewing and weaving in ends
Notes:
  • Make 2
  • All stitches are to be crocheted in the back loop (BLO)
Pattern:
Begin with a slip stitch and chain 41
Row 1: Hdc in second chain from hook and each stitch across, ch1, turn (40 stitches)
Visual aid:  After turning
Row 2: Hdc in next 38 stitches, ch1, turn (38 sts)
Row 3: Hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn
Row 4: Hdc in next 36 stitches, ch1, turn (36 sts)
Row 5: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 6: Hdc in next 32 stitches, ch1, turn (32 sts)
Row 7: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 8: Hdc in next 30 stitches, ch1, turn (30 sts)
Row 9: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 10: Hdc in next 28 stitches, ch1, turn (28 sts)
Row 11: Hdc in each st across

Fasten off for first side then repeat the pattern for your second piece.
At the end of the second piece (after row 11) do not fasten off.

You should now have 2 pieces that look like this:

Construction:

Remove your hook and match up both pieces like this. The piece with yarn attached should be on the bottom. (Be sure not to pull any stitches out)

Place your hook through the first stitch on the first piece made and pull the loop from the second piece through the stitch, then ch1.

SC in same stitch and the next 25 stitches (going through both layers) for a total of 26 stitches leaving the last two stitches unworked. It is not necessary to do BLO here.
Fasten off.
Place the seam in the back. When you open it up it should look like this:

At this point, you would fold your fin around the rest of the mermaid tail. Place the tail on your fin with about a half inch overlap for sewing.

I only made a fin for this tutorial, so you may have to refer to the first pic for an idea. Fold over the sides meeting in the middle, like this:

I sewed the corners together, then sewed the fin to the tail. Unfold the bottom of the fin and shape as desired.

If you like, you can sew the sides to the rest of the fin to keep it's shape. I left mine like this.

Show & Tell

I hope everyone had a great holiday and is refreshed for the new year. My first post of the year, will be a show & tell of projects that were done with my free patterns. I haven't done them in a long time and I have fallen way behind. Please forgive me if I said I will post your pictures and didn't get around to it. The link to my free patterns is at the top of the blog page. Feel free to do as you wish with your finished items. I would greatly appreciate a link back to my blog if you post or sell your items.

First up is Alice's beanie hats. She used the Quick Easy Winter Beanie pattern for gifts and for donating to Emily's Hats for Hope Initiative.  Want to help donate? Check out her website to find out more about Emily and her project for helping the homeless and working poor.

Next is Juliana's beautiful headwarmers. The Easy Headwarmer Pattern has a video tutorial to help you crochet along. I love her flowers and black and white theme. I'm not sure what pattern she used for the flowers, but they are lovely.

Have you made a project using one of my free patterns? I would love to see. Email me!

Tag Area:
I wasn’t sure what to call this part. It’s usually where a tag is and it holds the smaller end behind the wide part.
I put mine about 11 inches from the point around row 34.
Join the yarn in one of the stitches near the edge, but not the very edge. Sc in same stitch and one stich next to it, ch1, turn. (2 sts)
Hdc in ea, ch1 turn. (2st)
Repeat last row until you are near the other side but not over the edge of the tie (about 7 rows).
Insert hook into first st on tag, slip stitch into a stitch near the edge of the tie, sl st in next stitch, going through both layers (the tag and edge of the tie).

Finish off and weave in ends.

Show -n- Tell

Here is another floppy made from my pattern. Here is a link for the pattern: Floppy Sun Hat. This one is made by Kathie and she used Hobby Lobby's "I Love This Cotton!"  I really like the different shades of blue in there. Thanks for sending me the pic, Kathie, it looks great!

Hanging Plant Holder

I had this stand for hanging plants for a while. I didn't like the look of the plastic hangers and hooks, plus they break easily. I found a pattern on Ravelry.com and adjusted it for what I was working with. Click for the free pattern.

I used this Natural Jute from Hobby Lobby and a size N crochet hook. I only had one skein so I was only able to complete one and some of another one. I need to make two more to fill my stand. Sounds like a trip to Hobby Lobby is in my near future.

Now what kind of plants should i put in them?

Show and Tell

Here are a few more pictures from people who have used my free patterns. My floppy sun hat seems to be the most popular. I love how you can take someone's pattern and make it in your own style. I think that's why I like crochet so much, it's so versatile.

Here is Heather's Floppy sun hat. It came out great!

And here is Elizabeth's Floppy sun hat. Elizabeth used a J hook, and a G hook for the brim. She used two strands, one size 10 thread and the other size 3 thread.

Beautiful job ladies! Thank you very much for the pictures!
