Children's Head Warmer Pattern

Here is a crochet pattern for a child's size head or ear warmer. It is almost identical to the adult sized pattern but it is a little shorter and more narrow as you can see below.

Materials:
  • Worsted Weight Yarn
  •  Size I Crochet Hook
  •  A button that will fit in between your double crochet stitches
  • Thread and needle
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
ea = each

Note:  First ch 2 counts as dc.

Instructions:

Row 1: ch 6, dc in first 3 chs made, making 4 dc total.

Row 2: ch2, turn. dc in 2nd stitch from hook and each stitch across, including very last st. (5dc)

Row 2 will have 5dc
Rows 3-9: Repeat row 2. This will make an increase per row and you should end up with 12 dc in last row.
Row 10: ch 2, turn. dc in each st across, but NOT the very last st in order to maintain 12 dc.

Rows 11-29: Repeat row 10.

Row 30: ch 2, turn. Skip first st, dc in each st across. (11 dc)

Rows 31-37: Repeat row 30 to continue to decrease. You will have 4 dc in the last row.
Final piece is about 20" long

At this point you could fasten off or you could crochet a border. A simple hdc around looks nice and you could even do it in a contrasting color. Another border stitch I like is the crab stitch, also known as reverse single crochet as seen below.

Show & Tell Mermaid Tail

Here's another show and tell project. This one is made from my mermaid fin pattern. Donna sent me a picture of her beautiful finished mermaid tail. She added some wire so the fin will keep it's shape. Brilliant! I wish I could make the picture bigger to show off the details. Thank's for sending the pic, Donna!

Show & Tell Crochet Tie

Here is a lovely picture from Sue of a tie that was crocheted as a gift for Father's day! Very stylish! She made the bottom of the tie square instead of the triangular shape that the pattern makes. I know I've said it before, but that's what I love about crocheting - the versatility.

Crochet Baby Shoes

I've been working on some really cute baby shoes lately. My cousin requested some faux Converse, then some baby boat shoes. Then I got another request for some girly baby shoes, so I made the little mary janes. They are all so cute! You can find links to the free patterns below.

The Converse shoes were a little intimidating, and being that I haven't had a little one in a while, I forgot how big a 6 month old foot would be. The first pair that I made were way too big. They were most likely a 1 year old size. I used a pattern that I found on Ravelry. The yarn I used was bigger than what the pattern called for and so was my hook. Since it was my first try, they weren't so cute either. I guess they were cute enough that my neighbor wanted to take them home, so now they are gone. On my second try I found another free download on Ravelry. This time the sneakers may be a little on the small side, but at least they will stretch a little. The first pic is unfinished (missing the stripe) but it shows how tiny they are in my hand.

Next up are the baby boat shoes. My cousin decided that she also wanted some of these little cuties for her little one. The pattern is from Whistle and Ivy. It is an awesome blog well worth checking out. I used the size for a 6-9 month old baby. They are a little bigger than the sneakers, but not much so either I crochet too tight, or they are just right. I guess we'll find out. These shoes took a little assembling, but overall not very difficult. The blog also has links to her videos to go along with her patterns for the visual learners.

Last by certainly not least are the baby mary janes. The pattern is from the same website as the boat shoes so the sole is made similar but this shoe is worked in the round. They were really quick to work up too. I guess the only thing that slowed me down was finding buttons small enough. My mom requested these for someone's baby. These are also made with the size 6-9  month instructions.

Quick Easy Winter Beanie Tutorial

I've been meaning to make this video to go along with my pattern for a long time. I finally got a chance to get to it. It's my first time actually talking in a video. It was a little weird at first and I ended up recording over my initial audio. Let me know what you think. Some parts are a little slow going, but overall not so bad for an amateur. Here's the video:

Crocheting with Family

I had a fun and busy weekend with my family. One aunt came from Hawaii and will be making her way back to the Philippines. My parents came from Pennsylvania, another aunt, uncle, and cousins came to visit from New York. It was a full house. I got to show off all of my creations, and it felt nice having people here who are genuinely interested. My cousin was my weekend model and posted her "selfies" on Facebook. She even got me a few sales! Thanks cuz!

I started on my orders and then we had this crochet party going! I showed them how to crochet the hat that my cousin in wearing above. The pattern is a free download from Ravelry.com, called Emm'hat by Mathilde Plus. It's made with chunky yarn and a size N hook. Here we are. My mom on the left, me in green, my aunt next to me and my cousin next to her. My husband was so amused when he saw us here crocheting so he snapped a picture.

Unfortunately, I only got a picture of one finished product (and that's because it was left behind). This is my aunt's finished hat. She used two strands of worsted weight yarn since I didn't have any more bulky weight. It came out great! I guess she didn't want to take it, because it doesn't go with her outfit, plus it's hot in the Philippines. ;) Love you, Tita, have a safe trip back to PI!

Sparkle Cloche

I made this sparkly crochet cloche using my free Classic Cloche pattern. The pictures really don't do it justice. It is quite stunning, yet so simple and classy. I haven't found the perfect adornment yet. I'm thinking something in deep red. Maybe a ribbon or a flower. To make this piece, I used Hobby Lobby's I Love this Yarn! Metallic. I added a couple extra rows, and in the last row I added an increase every 10th stitch to give it a little more flair.

Show & Tell

I hope everyone had a great holiday and is refreshed for the new year. My first post of the year, will be a show & tell of projects that were done with my free patterns. I haven't done them in a long time and I have fallen way behind. Please forgive me if I said I will post your pictures and didn't get around to it. The link to my free patterns is at the top of the blog page. Feel free to do as you wish with your finished items. I would greatly appreciate a link back to my blog if you post or sell your items.

First up is Alice's beanie hats. She used the Quick Easy Winter Beanie pattern for gifts and for donating to Emily's Hats for Hope Initiative.  Want to help donate? Check out her website to find out more about Emily and her project for helping the homeless and working poor.

Next is Juliana's beautiful headwarmers. The Easy Headwarmer Pattern has a video tutorial to help you crochet along. I love her flowers and black and white theme. I'm not sure what pattern she used for the flowers, but they are lovely.

1: 2hdc in circle, ch1, turn. Pull the circle closed. (2 sts)
 2: 2hdc in each stitch, ch1, turn. (4 sts)
3: 2hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2hdc in last st, ch1, turn. Increase made on first and last stitch. (6 sts)
4: 2hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 4 stitches, 2hdc in last st, ch1, turn.  (8 sts)
5: 2hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in last st, ch1, turn. (10 sts)
6: 1 hdc in each st across, ch1, turn. (10 sts)
7: Repeat row 6 until piece measures about 18.5 inches long from point.
………. Estimated row numbers below (you may be on a different row number)……….
58: 1hdc in first 4 sts, hdc decrease together for next two sts, 1hdc in last 4 sts, ch1, turn.  (9 sts)
59-66: 1hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn.  (9 sts) Maintain st count over 8 rows.
67: 1hdc in first 4 sts, hdc decrease together, 1hdc in last 3 sts, ch1, turn.  (8 sts)
68-75: 1hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn.  (8 sts) Maintain st count over 8 rows.

77-84: 1hdc in each stitch across, ch1 turn. (7 sts) Maintain st count over 8 rows.
85: 1hdc in first 3 sts, hdc decrease together, 1hdc in last 2 sts, ch1, turn. (6 sts)
86-170: 1hdc in ea st across, ch1 turn. (6 sts) You can continue to desired length. Mine is about 61 inches long.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Tag Area:
I wasn’t sure what to call this part. It’s usually where a tag is and it holds the smaller end behind the wide part.
I put mine about 11 inches from the point around row 34.
Join the yarn in one of the stitches near the edge, but not the very edge. Sc in same stitch and one stich next to it, ch1, turn. (2 sts)
Hdc in ea, ch1 turn. (2st)
Repeat last row until you are near the other side but not over the edge of the tie (about 7 rows).
Insert hook into first st on tag, slip stitch into a stitch near the edge of the tie, sl st in next stitch, going through both layers (the tag and edge of the tie).

Finish off and weave in ends.

Crochet Christmas Wreath

If you follow me on Pinterest, you probably noticed that I've been looking at Christmas wreaths lately- specifically crocheted Christmas wreaths. After looking at some inspiring pins, I started making my own. I used different ideas and patterns that I saw and pieced them together for my wreath.

Here is a link to the wreath pattern, it comes from a blog called Sew is Me. I didn't have bulky weight yarn so I just used two strands of the worsted weight, green yarn that I had stashed away. Crocheting around the wreath is not much different than crocheting around a small loop for earrings, but it seems more complicated because the wreath is HUGE in comparison. It takes a little getting used to.

I did a search to find a poinsettia pattern and I loved the look of this one. You can find it on PlanetJune Craft Blog. I only made the smallest flower (style A on her blog). The tiny pearl in the middle is actually a pin and that's how I stuck it to the wreath. I pinned rather than glued all of the adornments so that I can use them in other things later, if I decide to.

I couldn't resist the candy cane, and it is so easy to make. The video tutorial by Teresa Richardson can be found here on YouTube. I didn't have a pipe cleaner, but I did have some wire handy and it worked just as well.

My little Sackboy elf is chillin' on the bottom of the wreath. Unfortunately, the free pattern that I found for this a long time ago is no longer available. It was some sort of legal thing and the blogger decided to remove it. My sons are so tempted to play with this guy. If you don't know what a Sackboy is, it's from the Sony Play Station game LittleBigPlanet.

I had the bow from an old gift and the lettering came from Walmart. I did a lot of changing and rearranging, adding and taking away but I think I'm finally done. At one point, I wanted to make the sackboy look like he was trying to climb up and steal the candy cane, but I settled for this look. I can always change it, but for now it's ready to go on the door.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope you enjoy the holidays and time with loved ones!

Show & Tell Headwarmers

I've been so behind on my Show & Tell posts. I guess since the government is shutdown I have a little more time for my hobbies.  Sara sent me some pictures of her beautiful crochet head warmers and scarf. She used my free pattern that you can find here. She also had some tips for women with bangs who don't want a wide head warmer. She said "if others ask about narrowing the headband, you can narrow it to 10 dc's wide, and it'll still cover your ears." Great tip!

The first one is made from two strands of a sport weight wool.

This warmer and scarf was made from a teal green, Paton's Promise, which is a fuzzy sport weight yarn.

They look so cozy! Thank you, Sara, for sending the pics. It took forever to post, but I finally got to it.

Crochet Skirt

I got this pattern as a free download from Ravelry.com. It's called EmmaJean's Minty Green Skirt. It took a while for me to finally finish it, but it was worth the time. I used Hobby Lobby's "I Love this Cotton" in Taupe, so mine is not minty green, obviously. This cotton is nice and soft. I didn't make the frill as long as the pattern calls for. (I'm short and so is the person I was making it for) I was actually thinking of continuing and making it a maxi. Hmm. I'll think about it.

Show & Tell

Rachel sent me her finished items from my Quick Easy Winter Beanies pattern. This is her first ever crocheted hat and I'm so honored that she chose my pattern! It looks like it turned out great. She said she combined two beanies to make a reversible beanie with two different colors to choose from, or you can flip the bottom up like it shows in her picture. Brilliant! Great job, Rachel, and thanks so much for sending pictures!
