Woven Scarf Pattern

St. Francis Scarf
I named this scarf for the uniform colors of my son’s school and the first one made
was donated to the Francis House to give out with their Christmas gifts.

Materials:

  • Size I crochet hook (5.5 mm)
  • Worsted weight yarn in 3 colors. I used:
    • Red Heart Heat Wave (1 ball each)
      • Summer Night (Black - Color A)
      • Radio (Grey - Color B)
      • Luggage (Burgundy - Color C)

Pattern:

Mesh base:
In color A, Ch 33. Leave a tail about 6 inches long to blend in with fringe.
Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook. *Ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next* to end. (16 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3 turn. Dc in each dc across chaining 1 in between each dc.
Rows 3-7: Repeat row 2. (7 rows of color A) Cut yarn.
Rows 8-14: Join color B and repeat row 2. (7 rows of color B)
Rows 15-21: Join color A and repeat row 2. (7 rows of color A)
Rows 22-28: Join color B and repeat row 2. (7 rows of color B)
Rows 29-31: Join color C and repeat row 2. (3 rows of color C)
Continue the mesh base pattern:
7 rows of color A
7 rows of color B
7 rows of color A
7 rows of color B
3 rows of color C
7 rows of color A
7 rows of color B
7 rows of color A
7 rows of color B
Finish off your yarn ends.

Woven chains:

Make 8 chains of color A
Make 4 chains of color B
Make 3 chains of color C

Ch about 180. Leave a tail about 6 inches on each side to blend in with the fringe.
If you’re not sure the chain will fit, weave in one chain to see how well it fits within the scarf
then adjust accordingly. They should stretch a little to fit.
Weave 4 of the color A chains through the mesh, alternating directions.
So if you started with the first chain going over, under, over, under, then when you start the
second chain go under, over, under, over, etc.
Weave 4 of the color B chains next.
Weave 3 of the color C chains.
Weave the last 4 color A chains.

Fringe:
String together 3 strands of each color about 12 inches long.
Make a larks head knot in each chain space, pulling in any tails.
15 knots on each end of the scarf. Be sure to make the knots the same way for a clean look.

Fold the scarf in half and even out the fringe by trimming.

Valentine Doll Dress

I found this adorable free crochet pattern on Ravelry.com by Elaine Phillips. This was a pretty easy pattern until I got to the sleeves. The way it is written made it really confusing to me. Eventually I got it done. I wish I could explain how I figured out the sleeves so I can have it for my own future reference. If this dress is sold and someone requests another, I will be sure to update this post.

The shoes are a pattern that I used before by Whistle and Ivy called Little Dot Mary Janes. I just didn't put the "dot" or the strap that is supposed to go across. I added some little rhinestones to give them some character.

Show & Tell, Head Warmer

I love Show & Tell! Allie made a beautiful head warmer using my pattern and she was so kind to send pictures of the final piece.

Quick Easy Winter Beanie Tutorial

I've been meaning to make this video to go along with my pattern for a long time. I finally got a chance to get to it. It's my first time actually talking in a video. It was a little weird at first and I ended up recording over my initial audio. Let me know what you think. Some parts are a little slow going, but overall not so bad for an amateur. Here's the video:

Crochet Mermaid Tail Fin Pattern

As I said in my previous post, I got the main mermaid tail pattern from this link. It's a free pattern for an infant written in UK crochet terms. If you need any help with the pattern just let me know by leaving a comment below or via email. This pattern is only for the tail fin pictured above.

Materials:
  • Worsted weight yarn or same yarn used for main body
  • Size I hook or same size used for main body
  • Needle for sewing and weaving in ends
Notes:
  • Make 2
  • All stitches are to be crocheted in the back loop (BLO)
Pattern:
Begin with a slip stitch and chain 41
Row 1: Hdc in second chain from hook and each stitch across, ch1, turn (40 stitches)
Visual aid:  After turning
Row 2: Hdc in next 38 stitches, ch1, turn (38 sts)
Row 3: Hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn
Row 4: Hdc in next 36 stitches, ch1, turn (36 sts)
Row 5: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 6: Hdc in next 32 stitches, ch1, turn (32 sts)
Row 7: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 8: Hdc in next 30 stitches, ch1, turn (30 sts)
Row 9: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 10: Hdc in next 28 stitches, ch1, turn (28 sts)
Row 11: Hdc in each st across

Fasten off for first side then repeat the pattern for your second piece.
At the end of the second piece (after row 11) do not fasten off.

You should now have 2 pieces that look like this:

Construction:

Remove your hook and match up both pieces like this. The piece with yarn attached should be on the bottom. (Be sure not to pull any stitches out)

Place your hook through the first stitch on the first piece made and pull the loop from the second piece through the stitch, then ch1.

SC in same stitch and the next 25 stitches (going through both layers) for a total of 26 stitches leaving the last two stitches unworked. It is not necessary to do BLO here.
Fasten off.
Place the seam in the back. When you open it up it should look like this:

At this point, you would fold your fin around the rest of the mermaid tail. Place the tail on your fin with about a half inch overlap for sewing.

I only made a fin for this tutorial, so you may have to refer to the first pic for an idea. Fold over the sides meeting in the middle, like this:

I sewed the corners together, then sewed the fin to the tail. Unfold the bottom of the fin and shape as desired.

If you like, you can sew the sides to the rest of the fin to keep it's shape. I left mine like this.

Crochet Baby Photo Props

I may have lost my mojo for a little while. I haven't been crocheting or crafting much lately. Maybe because it's summer time. I usually slow down during the summer, but not this much. I think this was more like a writer's block or crochet block, if you will. So I picked up a hook the other day and decided to get stitchin'. I'm in the process of making some photo props for a friend. I don't have any baby models, so you won't really get the full effect with my pictures. The first thing I made was a baby nest. I found the pattern on Ravelry and you can find it at this link. Hopefully it's a good size for her models.

The next one is a Mermaid tail. I got the pattern for the tail at this link. The pattern is written in UK terms, so I had to frog it a few times before I figured that out. DC = SC, TR = DC. The shell increasing and decreasing was a little confusing, but once I got it, it wasn't so bad. I did something different for the fin. I felt like the fin in the pattern is a bit too small. I would think you need a rather large fin to swim around as a mermaid, but who knows for sure?  I made my own fin pattern, which I will post later. I got the idea for the fin at this link. The shell and starfish patterns can be found here. All of the linked crochet patterns are free! If you decide to try them and run into problems or get stuck, I will be happy to help you out. Just leave a comment or email me.

Show & Tell

I have two to show today. First up is Laresa's cell phone case. It's a lovely spring yellow and the butterfly is too cute! She added a button and a strap. Very nice! Click here for the free pattern.

Next is Nancy's floppy sun hat. I like how she mixed it up with a different color brim. Click here for this free pattern.

Thank you so much, ladies, for the lovely pictures! Have you made a project using one of my free patterns? I would love to see it. Email me!

 2: 2hdc in each stitch, ch1, turn. (4 sts)
3: 2hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2hdc in last st, ch1, turn. Increase made on first and last stitch. (6 sts)

5: 2hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in last st, ch1, turn. (10 sts)
6: 1 hdc in each st across, ch1, turn. (10 sts)
7: Repeat row 6 until piece measures about 18.5 inches long from point.
………. Estimated row numbers below (you may be on a different row number)……….
58: 1hdc in first 4 sts, hdc decrease together for next two sts, 1hdc in last 4 sts, ch1, turn.  (9 sts)
59-66: 1hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn.  (9 sts) Maintain st count over 8 rows.
67: 1hdc in first 4 sts, hdc decrease together, 1hdc in last 3 sts, ch1, turn.  (8 sts)
68-75: 1hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn.  (8 sts) Maintain st count over 8 rows.
76: 1hdc in first 3 sts, hdc decrease together, 1 hdc in last 3 sts, ch1, turn. (7 sts)

85: 1hdc in first 3 sts, hdc decrease together, 1hdc in last 2 sts, ch1, turn. (6 sts)
86-170: 1hdc in ea st across, ch1 turn. (6 sts) You can continue to desired length. Mine is about 61 inches long.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Tag Area:
I wasn’t sure what to call this part. It’s usually where a tag is and it holds the smaller end behind the wide part.
I put mine about 11 inches from the point around row 34.
Join the yarn in one of the stitches near the edge, but not the very edge. Sc in same stitch and one stich next to it, ch1, turn. (2 sts)
Hdc in ea, ch1 turn. (2st)
Repeat last row until you are near the other side but not over the edge of the tie (about 7 rows).
Insert hook into first st on tag, slip stitch into a stitch near the edge of the tie, sl st in next stitch, going through both layers (the tag and edge of the tie).

Finish off and weave in ends.
