Show & Tell

Karen sent me pictures of her floppy sun hats made from my free pattern. They look great! She listed them on ebay.com and can be found by the username "hillbubba". Check out all her listings! Last I checked, I didn't see the sun hats, so maybe they have been sold! How exciting! Thanks for the pictures, Karen!

Tia sent me this picture of her floppy hat that she made with plarn. If you don't know what that is, it's plastic yarn cut from plastic bags. She made adjustments to the pattern for the brim and added a very cute flower from a pattern that she found on Ravelry.com. It came out beautiful! Thanks for the pic, Tia.

This is Sara's Floppy Sun Hat. She made her's a little larger by starting with 8 puff stitches instead of 6 and adjusting the pattern as necessary. I know some people were saying that the hat was coming out too small so, here's proof that starting with more puff stitches can work well to make it a bigger size. Also, if you still feel like you're making baby hats, make sure that starting in round 5, you are adding an extra chain between the puff stitches. It will feel like you are chaining 2. Thank you for the picture, Sara! It looks great!

Show -N- Tell

I haven't had a show and tell in a while. I got this email while I was on vacation from Lynette in Puerto Rico. She made her floppy sun hat using twine from a hardware store. It came out beautiful and she said people can't believe she made it herself!  Thanks for the picture Lynette!

Michelle did a lovely job on her first crochet hat projects! I'm happy that she chose my pattern. She made these floppy sun hats for her daughters and plans to make one for herself. She said she completed one hat in one day and the pattern was "easy peasy!" Thank you for sending the pics, Michelle.

Here is Sari's Floppy Sun Hat all the way from Finland. Everyone seems to be using multicolored yarn. Maybe I should try that too! I love the pinks. Thanks for the pic, Sari, great job!

Plarn Floppy

When I first started crocheting as an adult, my choice of materials were whatever was the cheapest or my favorite: free. I wasn't very good, and wasn't sure how long I would stay interested in this craft. I liked using plarn because it was free and I liked the idea of making something useful out of "trash". If you don't know what plarn is, it is made from plastic bags that you would get from the store. You cut them up and make them into yarn, hence the name plarn, plastic-yarn. There are lots of tutorials on how to make plarn all over YouTube.

I was mostly making cute bags that in turn were more sturdy than just a regular plastic bag. I actually sold a few of the bags. I don't have pictures because that was way before this blog started. I graduated from plarn and now I have a huge yarn stash. It's mostly acrylic and cotton, but one day I will move on to the fancier yarns. Maybe I can say I'm an expert by then. Hmm, I'm still learning, and I'll probably still be learning then too. I like to keep an open mind. Yarn is definitely easier to work with than the plastic.

Here is a floppy made from plarn. I used brown grocery bags from Giant. I like the specks of purple scattered throughout. It's a little small and would probably be hot, but at least it's cute. I guess I still need to work on the prototype.

Have you ever used plarn?

Bright Floppies

I love how these pictures turned out. I spent some time trying to get the all white background going on, but the room was dark and my spot light is broken. This is the best I could do for now. I'm still working on my photography skills.

Three brightly colored floppy sun hats for the summer.
I just added these for sale in my online store: PerfectMix Creations

This is Christa's Floppy Sun Hat. She used sport weight yarn and followed the pattern as written. She says it will fit a 3 to 7 year old. A few of you asked how to tweak the pattern to make a smaller hat. I had suggested a smaller hook, or to start with fewer puff stitches in the first round. I didn't think of using a lighter weight yarn. Brilliant! Thank you for the picture, Christa! Your little girl looks adorable!

Here is Hnin's picture of the Floppy Sun Hat that she made. This is her very first crocheted hat, and I'm so happy that she chose my pattern. She did a great job! The pastel colors remind me of coloring Easter eggs. Thanks for the pic, Hnin!

I finally finished and posted the second part of the video for the Floppy Sunhat Pattern. That one is pretty repetitive, so there are a lot of fast forward parts. I hope it is clear enough. The lighting was kind of bad. I'm still working on that. Parts of it were a little blurry too. Sorry about that. Phew, other than that, I'd say it was a success!

Well here is another Floppy Sun Hat that was recently made by Dee with my pattern. Thanks for sending the pic Dee, it looks great!

If you made this hat or any of my other patterns, I would love to see how it turned out. I'll only post your pics with your permission.
