Easy Head Warmer Pattern

My husband's aunt was telling me about these head warmers that she has been seeing people wear up north. She tried to explain it to me, saying that it was wide on top, tapered toward the back, and closed with a button. Then she looked online and found a picture. So after seeing the pic, I decided to try to make one. It didn't look that hard. So this is what I came up with.

Materials:
  • Worsted Weight Yarn
  •  Size I Crochet Hook
  •  A button that will fit in between your double crochet stitches
  • Thread and needle
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
ea = each

Note:  First ch 2 counts as dc.

Instructions:

Row 1: ch 6, dc in first 3 chs made, making 4 dc total

Row 2: ch 2, turn. dc in 2nd st from hook and each stitch across, including very last st (5 dc)

Row 3-13: repeat row 2. This will make an increase per row and you will end up with 16 dc total in last row
Row 14: ch 2, turn. dc in each stitch across, but NOT the very last stitch to maintain 16 dc
Row 15-31: repeat row 14 (16 dc)
Row 32: ch 2, turn. skip first st, dc in ea st across (15 dc)

Row 33-42: repeat row 32 to continue with a decrease per row until you end up with 4 dc in last row
Fasten off, weave in ends.

It should look like this:

Add your button to one side.
Now you have an adjustable head warmer! You can adorn the top with a crochet flower(s) or whatever you like. I found a leaf pattern that I will try, for a fall look.

cute! I need to make several of these for gifts this Christmas!

Oh my goodness; you are SO clever! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for to make for my "twenty-something" oh-so-trendy daughters. You husband's aunt is correct; in the north these are the very latest winter accessory, and hip boutiques charge a small fortune for these head wraps. Now I can make them for Christmas, and won't "break the bank"! Thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad you like it! Thanks for visiting and come back soon.

Great job, here in KY we don't get that much cold weather but when we do, we need something like this, I'll be making this soon! You did a fantastic job

Love this! How long did yours come out to be?

Excellent tutorial. Exceptional pictures; what an idea to include word graphics on the picture.

Marsha, mine came out to be between 21 and 22 inches. Thanks to everyone for the great comments! Thanks for visiting my blog.

Excellent tutorial! It would also be cute with the button in the front, especially if it was a big bright button. (p.s. Thanks for all the amazing comments on my blog! You're the best!)

I do live way up north and this will come in handy in these brutal NH winters. This is a great pattern and the photo tutorial is excellent. I just hope this looks as good on my stepdaughter and it does on your model.

Thanks so much for posting this free pattern for the ear warmer. I was at the doc's this a.m. and the receptionist had something similar she'd bought at a craft sale for $15 - and it was Made in China - although it did say 'handmade'. It had a glorious large flower on the temple side as well. She asked if I tought I could make it, because she desperately wants one in every color. lol Your pattern is perfect!

Now I have to do is find a pattern for a larger flower and I'm all set. The one I'm doing is a prototype to show her - she will be buying her own yarn - but I'm psyched about making these for my 2daughters and granddaughter, all of whom have long hair. It looks so darned cute on.

Thanks again and have a wonderful Christmas.

You are daBomb! I have now made 3 of your patterns - the cloche hat, the beanie and this great earwarmer. I have paid for patterns that don't work up as easily or look as good as yours do when finished. You are a great designer and many, many thanks for the wonderful patterns.

I have been looking for a head warmer pattern for over a week now that I could follow. Your pattern was very easy to follow. Thanks for posting!! I just worked one up for my neice who wanted one. I double stranded my yarn using a J hook and it made for a thicker and much warmer headband. I will send a pic your way!

Anonymous said...

OMG!! I love these. My daughter had me make one for all her friends. So far I have made 6. Now can you please provide an easy pattern for a ruffely flower? That would complete mine.

daperfectmix said...

@shell34: I can't wait to see pics! I'll feature your pics on the blog.

@anonymous: I'll have to work on a ruffly flower pattern for you.

Thanks for all the comments! I'm glad you all like the pattern. I need to come up with some new ones.

Anonymous said...

Luv this pattern! So easy to follow! Thanks for posting!

Anonymous said...

Can somebody explain the first step to me...I am confused on how you are chaining six but only doing 3 dc and you end up with 4? Please help...I want to make this for Christmas gifts.

daperfectmix said...

the last three chains count as the first dc, then when you make 3 dc in the first three chains you come out with a total of 4 dc. i hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for posting your easy to follow head warmer pattern! I am so happy I found one that wasn't a knitting pattern. I added a border around the edge to finish it off and it looks really nice. I made one for myself and one for a friend that turned out great. She was so thrilled she wants to pay me to make her another for her daughter and her niece for Christmas. Do you have a policy on people using your free pattern as a basis to create something of their own to sell?

daperfectmix said...

I don't have any problem with anyone selling items made from my patterns. I only have one request, and that is if anyone asks for the pattern or where you got it, that you direct them to my site. Thanks for visiting and for the comments!

I've been searching everywhere for a good base pattern for this headband, Thank you! I might mix it up by finding a way to do some cable stitches. It's also very trendy to wear it with your hair up and with the button on top of your head instead of at the bottom :)

Unknown said...

How long is this supposed to be when finished? I think mine is too big.

daperfectmix said...

Hi Carolyn, My headwarmer comes out to be about 21.5 inches long. You should be able to button it in between any stitch so it fits.

If I wanted this to be for a toddler do you have a pattern for that?
