As I said in my previous post, I got the main mermaid tail pattern from this link. It's a free pattern for an infant written in UK crochet terms. If you need any help with the pattern just let me know by leaving a comment below or via email. This pattern is only for the tail fin pictured above.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn or same yarn used for main body
- Size I hook or same size used for main body
- Needle for sewing and weaving in ends
Notes:
- Make 2
- All stitches are to be crocheted in the back loop (BLO)
Pattern:
Begin with a slip stitch and chain 41
Row 1: Hdc in second chain from hook and each stitch across, ch1, turn (40 stitches)
Visual aid: After turning |
Row 2: Hdc in next 38 stitches, ch1, turn (38 sts)
Row 3: Hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn
Row 4: Hdc in next 36 stitches, ch1, turn (36 sts)
Row 5: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 6: Hdc in next 32 stitches, ch1, turn (32 sts)
Row 7: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 8: Hdc in next 30 stitches, ch1, turn (30 sts)
Row 9: Hdc in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 10: Hdc in next 28 stitches, ch1, turn (28 sts)
Row 11: Hdc in each st across
Fasten off for first side then repeat the pattern for your second piece.
At the end of the second piece (after row 11) do not fasten off.
You should now have 2 pieces that look like this:
Construction:
Remove your hook and match up both pieces like this. The piece with yarn attached should be on the bottom. (Be sure not to pull any stitches out)
Place your hook through the first stitch on the first piece made and pull the loop from the second piece through the stitch, then ch1.
SC in same stitch and the next 25 stitches (going through both layers) for a total of 26 stitches leaving the last two stitches unworked. It is not necessary to do BLO here.
Fasten off.
Place the seam in the back. When you open it up it should look like this:
At this point, you would fold your fin around the rest of the mermaid tail. Place the tail on your fin with about a half inch overlap for sewing.
I only made a fin for this tutorial, so you may have to refer to the first pic for an idea. Fold over the sides meeting in the middle, like this:

I sewed the corners together, then sewed the fin to the tail. Unfold the bottom of the fin and shape as desired.
If you like, you can sew the sides to the rest of the fin to keep it's shape. I left mine like this.

That's a pretty tail!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Mimi!
ReplyDeleteHi! This is beautiful! My son's friend is OBSESSED with mermaids and I will be making her a mermaid tail blanket for her birthday. Any chance you ever did the "uni-leg" part of the project? If so, I'd love the pattern. Thanks!
ReplyDeletethanks for the wonderful tail pattern. my sister (she is over 50 by the way) saw a mermaid leg cover and has kept pestering me to make it. I usually work off pattern with pictures, but just could not figure out the tail to my liking. so I found yours and it is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks you for this pattern idea. Made it a little bigger to use at the bottom of a small throw for my niece. know she'll love it
ReplyDeleteGreat work on the tail! Do u happen to have the pattern for the legs? I would love to do one for my 4 year old great niece she would love it
ReplyDeleteHi Carmen, The link to the pattern that I used for the body of the tail can be found at the beginning of the post. Here is the link: http://www.slugsontherefrigerator.com/blog/pattern-mermaid-tail
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteDo you have any suggestions/instructions for increasing the tail and fins to an adult-sized mermaid blanket? My college-aged niece is dying for me to make her this!
~Thank you!
Thanks for your question. My tips for making a larger sized fin would be to start out each section with a longer chain and continuing to decrease according to the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I did. I made 51 chains and 11 ridges on each side. To attach it to the blanket, I folded each side in 3. It opens nicely when laid flat.
DeleteThank you so much for sharing your pattern!😄
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your pattern!😄
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this pattern. I searched and searched for one, bought one, and none of them turned out right.
ReplyDeleteYours was perfect and well written.
You're very welcome! I'm so glad you like it!
ReplyDeletei love the look of the mermaid tail... however, if i want to make it for a child to use as a halloween costume How could i keep the bottom open for her feet so she could walk without tripping?
ReplyDeletethank you for your help..
bonnie
Hi Bonnie, I've seen people make mermaid costumes with different color tulle at the bottom as a fin. I guess if you want to crochet it, you could leave the bottom open and have the fin in the back like a train. I would love to see what you've come up with.
ReplyDeletehow many skeins does it take to make the entire outfit for say a ten year old?
ReplyDeleteWhat yarn and color did u use for the main green/blue one ?? It's so beautiful
ReplyDeleteI've never made one for a 10 year old, but I'm thinking of making an adult sized one. I'll post details on the blog when that happens.
ReplyDeleteThe yarn for the green/blue one is Caron Simply Soft Paints and the color is Peacock Feather.
I would love to make this for my grandbaby, but I have tried everything I could think of and it looks like that webpage/link is no good anymore. If you have the pattern any other way than from that webpage and good post it that would be great!
ReplyDeleteI just tried the link and it took me to the site (http://www.slugsontherefrigerator.com/blog/pattern-mermaid-tail). I do have a copy of that pattern that I re-wrote in US crochet terms. I don't want to post her pattern on my blog because it is not mine to post, so I don't want to practice bad blog etiquette if that is a thing. If anyone would like a copy of the mermaid pattern that I modified for US crochet terms, please send me an email and I will be happy to send you the pattern. daperfectmix@gmail

ps I just taught myself how to crochet a few months ago because I fell in love with the crochet converse and wanted to make them, your pattern was very easy to understand.. thanks again
Daperfectmix,
ReplyDeleteBeen searching for a mermaid pattern for my 6 y.o. granddaughter, and I think your mermaid fin is the best I've seen!
Question: For the fin, is there a reason to make two pieces and sew them together? Thinking you could just decrease from chain end, and increase from the center, and save the sewing step, but wanted to check if there is a structural reason - looks better done in two pieces.?
Everyone - how long did it take you to make this? I was supposed to make this for birthday last Sept. - aiming for Christmas now.

Hi Jackie,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! You know, I didn't even think to do it that way. That would probably work.
Thank you so much for your mermaid tail pattern. I've been searching trying to find a crochet pattern and your's looks doable. Could you please help me with the pattern for the body of the blanket; my email address is ejtillery2265@hotmail.com. I had a Christmas request for the blanket, found it online and when I received it realized this adult size would not fit anyone I know. So I need to make it myself. Thanks for your blog.

ReplyDeleteAuroradanen1980@yahoo.com
Hi daperfectmix,
ReplyDeleteJust found this pattern. I tried to email you at daperfectmix@gmail for the US version for tail and fin. But it said it was not a working email. Please advise
Thank you
Hi Mary Jane. Don't forget the .com at the end of the email address. Looking forward to your email.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I needed - a tail only, so I can sew it on the baby cocoon I'm making.
ReplyDeleteDo you have the same (or a similar) tail that would be a good size for a baby cocoon? I don't want the tail to be too big.
Thanks so much. Bev
Hi Bev! I'm not sure how the fin would look on a cocoon. I would just play around with the number of chains you begin with to see what would suit it better. I hope this helps! Happy Holidays!
