This is going to be my first attempt at writing a crochet pattern. This is a pretty simple beanie, so the pattern shouldn’t be too difficult to follow. I had to make this hat quite a few times to make sure I got my pattern just right. I am also trying to stock up for this fund raiser where I will be selling some things. I’ll tell you more about that in another post. Now, on to the pattern. I used a size I crochet hook. For larger or smaller sizes you can use a larger or smaller hook. I think this hat will fit a teen to adult head.
Abbreviations:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
hdc= half double crochet
dc= double crochet
First, you will start with a magic ring. Click here for Teresa's tutorial on how to do this.
Row 1: make 7 sc in the ring, pull the ring closed and join.
Row 2: ch 1 then 2 sc in each stitch around, join in first sc. you should have 14 stitches, total.
Row 3: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat all the way around. join with first hdc. 21 stitches.
Row 4: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat around. join with first hdc. 28 stitches.
Row 5: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat around. join with first hdc. 35 stitches.
Row 6: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 42 stitches
Row 7: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 5 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 49 stitches
Row 8: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 6 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 56 stitches
Row 9: ch 2 then 1 dc in each stitch around. join with first dc.
Row 10-16: repeat row 9. if you would like a longer hat, repeat row 9 until desired length.
Row 17 or last row: ch 1 and sc in each stitch around. join with first sc. fasten off.

Love the pattern! I'm excited to try it. Did you go through both loops of the stitch on your previous row or just one?
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm not sure which row you're asking about, but I went through both loops on all of the rows.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I meant...sorry! Thanks for clarifying!
ReplyDeleteOne more question (can you tell I'm working on it right now?) ;-) on Row 10-16, it says repeat Row 8. Does that mean Row 9 or did you keep increasing in the final rows?
Thanks again--I'm loving this hat!
oh yea.. whoops! I'll change that, thanks for pointing it out!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your pics when you're done! Are you going to post it on your blog?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! Though one might be a Christmas present, so I'll post what I can. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the help!
It's cute! I assume you used worsted weight yarn, or is it bulky?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Carol Ann
Yes I used worsted weight yarn. Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! i love it! my boyfriend is forever telling me to make him a beanie, but i couldn't find a pattern i liked, so thank you soooo much! makes the perfect birthday present!
ReplyDeleteSonia
Thanks Sonia, I'm glad you like it!
ReplyDeleteHello! I just finished crocheting a red hat with this patterns for my mom's birthday and it turned out great! Thank you so much for the clear, easy to follow and easy to crochet pattern! Especially friendly for a beginner like myself! : )
ReplyDeleteI was searching for an easy winter hat. I have had some requests for them from people at work. As soon as I am done commenting, I am going to get started on my first hat. Your page has certainly received a bookmark on my favorites and my facebook. Thanks so much!

I'm so glad I could help! Thanks for the comments!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the pattern :) We have a bunch of birthdays coming up in the family so I have to make a lot of presents. These will be perfect!!!
ReplyDeleteHad decided to make Hats and Scarfs for my family members this year for Christmas Gifts. I counted that I needed to make for 20 members. I started in September, and have 1/3 of them done. With looking to make several different items in a family,so that they are not all alike. I was always looking for other hat patterns. I thank you for coming up with this easier pattern to use my creative talents to make easy changes or the use of alot of different yarns to make this same hat style.
ReplyDeleteAs time is a factor, I'm so glad for your help with my projects. This pattern is also one that I can teach my student that is just learning about crocheting. Thanks!
This is the first thing I have ever made and I love it!!! I can't wait to get more yarn and start making hats for gifts! :D ~ Renae
ReplyDeleteI've never commented before but I had to tell you how much I love this beanie. I'm a novice and still found the pattern very easy to follow. I had the whole thing together in a morning. Thanks so much for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you all like my first free pattern! Please come back for future patterns. I'm working on a new one right now. I would love to see pics of your work from the patterns! If anyone would like to send one just click on my profile and send it in an email.
ReplyDeleteI think that I am about to give this pattern a try. I've looked at many winter hat patterns and this one sounds the most beginner-friendly of the ones that I've seen. I look forward to making it!
ReplyDeleteHow much yarn did you use to make this? I just made some gloves and I'd love a matching hat, but I don't want to get halfway through and realize I don't have enough yarn (and the craft stores by me stopped selling the brand of yarn I'm using).
ReplyDeleteMade two beanies for my son last night while watching the Broncos lose :( - but the hats came out great! Now my husband wants one. I did one in worsted and one in chunky scraps that I striped - I think it is the best! Thanks for great and simple directions.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed making this hat. I haven't done this pattern in years. I'm glad I found it. I made one hat now I have 3 more to make because everyone loved it.
ReplyDeleteGreat Pattern! I just finished a baby size beanie using 4 ply worsted weight and a H hook. it will fit a 7 month old baby perfectly. I followed your pattern to a tee only elemnating rows 15 and 16. This is the easiest pattern I have ever used to make a beanie that looks like a beanie. I am planing on making them for my suday school class of 3 and 4 year olds as well as for some older boys in my family for Christmas. It only took me an about an hour.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the great comments!
ReplyDeleteRaen - I'm not sure exactly how much yarn is used for one, but I can tell you that I can make three beanies from one skein of Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I think they are 3 oz, and I still have some yarn left over. I hope that helps.
this pattern was perfect. This is exactly the hat my brother wanted. Excellent instructions!
ReplyDeleteI am getting ready to strart. I like using 2 strands when making beannies. Will this mess up the pattern. I also love the fact that you posted the number of stitches at the end of each row.
ReplyDeleteI don't think using two strands will mess up the pattern at all. It will just make the beanie a little thicker.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the comments and for visiting my blog!
wonderful Beanie hat will start making them right after xmas for next year for charty. thanks very much vicky
ReplyDeleteGREAT Pattern. I made one for my 3 yr old granddaughter and modified slightly to fit (went to row 9 after row 7. That wasn't quite big enough, so I added 4 evenly spaced increases in next row then worked even. Love the simplicity and great fit. Well written directions. Am currently making one in sport weight (Vanna's Glamour) with an F hook - I crochet loosely and one more row of increases. Think you have a winner with this pattern. Appreciate you sharing.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the stitch count at the end of each round. I'm still new to crocheting so I like to count to make sure I didn't screw it up and that I joined on the correct ch. That was sooo helpful! What a great pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern! I made two hats this evening!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I think this are very cute.
ReplyDeleteI was actually asked by a guy... *gasp* (yes a guy!) to make him a beanie. All my patterns were too girlie, and my skill level isn't that great, but I think I can handle your pattern! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting and all the great comments!
ReplyDelete@ an angry Bunnie, this is a popular pattern for men and boys. It's simple and non-girly. lol. I usually use a J size hook for men.
Thank you so much! I am definately going to try it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this pattern. It is very well written and easy to follow and it works up very fast. I make a lot of hats for the salvation army and homeless shelters and this will be perfect. GREAT JOB DEAR !!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been crocheting for several years and have made tons of different things with different skill levels. The beanie always gave me trouble! I could never get the pattern quite right. When my girls announced it is hat day Thursday and they wanted me to make their hats, I knew I wanted one of those with the huge flower on the side. I found this pattern and went to work with blind faith that this would be different. I was so impressed with this pattern! It crochets quickly, the product looks fantastic, and it holds the flowers nicely(thank you glue gun!). I've bookmarked this pattern and will use it over and over again! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pattern! Easy, quick, and perfect results! Exactly what I was looking for. Needed a cute beanie I could do in a few hours, and this one is PERFECT!! Can't wait to make some more for gifts. Thanks bunches!!
ReplyDeleteFound your pattern through Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteThanks to you, I learned two new things-the magic loop & the half-double stitch.
All this time, I've been having trouble with pointy beanies and not getting that perfectly round top.
Mahalo!
You're welcome! I love all the feedback. I'm glad you like my pattern! Thanks for visiting the blog and please, come back soon.
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to add more rows to the pattern so you can turn back the last few rows to make like a cuff without ruining it?
ReplyDeleteSure, just continue to add rows until it is the length you'd like it to be.
ReplyDeleteThank You so much! My dad's birthday is coming up and everytime we go into the arts and crafts store, he points out all of the penn state colors, and asks me to make him a beanie. But, I am a beginner. I am pretty sure I will succeed in doing this pattern! Thank You
ReplyDeleteHands down best beanie pattern ever! My boyfriend's wool camo beanie fits h him like a comfy glove. I'm gonna try and modify for a baby....any suggestions?
ReplyDelete-erika
Thanks Erika! For a smaller beanie try using a smaller hook. I believe I used a size H hook to make one for my son, but you might have to experiment to get the perfect size that you want.
ReplyDeletei love the pattern ! Thank You soooooooooooooooooooo much for sharing im going to use it to make chemo hats ! -Alex
ReplyDeleteJust found this great pattern and your Classic Cloche.Lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat wool do you use? I am in Australia and don't know what worsted yarn is, its equivalent, or your hook size equivalent. Xan you help me please.
My Kai, thanks for visiting my blog. Worsted weight is about 10 ply and the hook size I is 5.5mm or J is 6mm. I have a small head so the 5.5mm is what I would use, but I think the bigger hook would make a more common size.
ReplyDeleteThankyou so much for your help. I made one before reading your reply and it was way too small as I guessed worsted yarn was about our 8ply with hook size being our 4mm. How wrong. Sincerely appreciate your assistance here and can't wait to do it again and get it right. Cheers :)
ReplyDeleteI am retired and love to crochet. I crochet hats to be donated to "Halos of Hope" for people going through cancer treatments. This little beanie will be "PERFECT" !!!!
ReplyDeletei cannot go to the first "mgic ring" section...plese help. my email is atahsina@yahoo.com. pls e mail me
ReplyDeletei cnnot get to the mgic ring t the first of the cap.plese explain.emil me at atahsina@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteCant wait to give the beanie pattern a try. I have to make a couple for a guy friend and the pattern seems much easier to follow then those I have searched on previously to viewing yours.
ReplyDeleteI do have a question, I notcied worsted yarn was used such as the Red Heart brand. I love crocheting with the I Love This Yarn brand. I know the texture is a bit softer and less stiff. Can I use I Love This Yarn and achieve the same results or will I need to double strand the yarn?
@shell34: you would get the same results with Hobby Lobby's yarn. You wouldn't have to double strand unless you wanted it to be thicker. I like working with that yarn too! I just love Hobby Lobby in general, and the sparkly "I love this Yarn!"
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is lovely! I have had a hard time making hats that actually fit and this pattern is so easy to follow. For once a beanie cap didn't turn out like a slouchy beret :) lol
ReplyDelete~Danni
just whipped up one of your hats for a quick christmas present for my fiance! i love it, sure he will, too. it was my first hat so it's a bit wonky, but i will definitely be making more!
ReplyDeleteso cute what size hook did you use?
ReplyDeleteim makeing it for my cousine hope she likes it
wwow where did you ever get the idea for the pattern?
ReplyDeletei love that this is a double crochet pattern!! doesn't take as long as those single crochets. thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust what I was looking for to make my twogrown boys the beanies they've been asking for!! It is SO easy to follow and SO FAST! THANK YOU!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern, I've had such trouble finding an ADULT beanie pattern that was easy and fast.
ReplyDeleteHook me Up
I love this pattern. I made my grandson one that resembles a football by using white yarn in rows 5 & 14 and using brown on the others, then sewed in the "stitch" turned out great!
ReplyDeleteThe football beanie sounds great! I would love to see pictures if you'd like to share.

oh my gosh! this pattern is perfect for my son! i have been trying to find one for him for a while now. he loves wearing hats. is there a way to alter this patter to make a new born beanie? my daughter would look cute in one as well! ill give you pics as soon as im done with the one im working on now :) thanks so much for making it so easy to follow!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley! Thanks for your comment! I haven't tried to make this for a newborn, but I would think using a smaller hook and a lighter weight yarn would do the trick. You could also start out with less stitches in the first round and adjust the pattern from there. I hope this helps! I can't wait to see your finished pieces!

Since you listed the number of stitches there should be at the end of each round, is it necessary to use a stitch marker? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderful pattern! I even used it while I was learning how to do lettering! I will send you a pic soon!
ReplyDeleteFound this pattern via Pinterest & I just wanted to say great pattern. I have found many patterns in my search that are poorly written but yours is easy to follow & put together really well. I finished it last night & looks great!
ReplyDeletethanks, pretty easy to do
ReplyDeletevery nice

Hi, I'm going to start making the hat now but wanted to know if you start in the same chain at the start of each row? I seem to always get a bulk when it starts that way? Your reply is greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeannie! You will be joining in the first stitch made in each round. Can you elaborate on the "bulk" you are getting? Is it in a certain spot?
ReplyDeleteI made the hat. I loved it. I was trying to learn how to crochet letters in my crochet project.
ReplyDeleteMy hat looks awesome. The letters went in perfectly. And I made fingerless gloves to match!
That's great! I would love to see the letters you crocheted into the hat!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great pattern--thanks. I've been looking for a simple one and this is it!
ReplyDeleteJust finished....easy project to follow. I added an extra row of hdc and then sc to the end to give it a cleaner finish. It also seems to help hold the shape better. Thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern. I just started my second one tonight and am experimenting with yarn and different size hooks. I want to make and donate them for next year.

Hire can I make this fur a smaller head person? I have made this and love it
ReplyDeleteI am just plain embarrassed! I've been crocheting awhile now. I have followed the instructions which are plain as day (thank you!). No matter what I do, I keep ending up with a 3 month or so size of beanie. What in the world am I doing wrong? I'm using Simply Soft yarn and an I hook. HELP! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should try a size J hook? I don't know what you could be doing different, have you looked at the video to see if there was something missing? Let me know if you still need help.
~Michelle
Thanks so much for this pattern! I'm busting my stash with quick hats and I think this is a good one to stick with! Perfect every time. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that you like it! Thanks, Lau!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this tutorial! It was super easy to follow. Last year I used another tutorial and the hats were really large.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteGoing to use this pattern to employ my crochet army to make 24 beanies for the visiting Beijing Queer Chorus. I'll send you a pic if I get one. :D
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awesome! Can't wait to see the pic! ;)
