Quick Easy Winter Beanies


This is going to be my first attempt at writing a crochet pattern. This is a pretty simple beanie, so the pattern shouldn’t be too difficult to follow. I had to make this hat quite a few times to make sure I got my pattern just right. I am also trying to stock up for this fund raiser where I will be selling some things. I’ll tell you more about that in another post. Now, on to the pattern. I used a size I crochet hook. For larger or smaller sizes you can use a larger or smaller hook. I think this hat will fit a teen to adult head. 
Abbreviations:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
hdc= half double crochet
dc= double crochet
First, you will start with a magic ring. Click here for Teresa's tutorial on how to do this.
Row 1: make 7 sc in the ring, pull the ring closed and join.
Row 2: ch 1 then 2 sc in each stitch around, join in first sc. you should have 14 stitches, total.
Row 3: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat all the way around. join with first hdc. 21 stitches.
Row 4: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat around. join with first hdc. 28 stitches.
Row 5: ch 1 then *1 hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat around. join with first hdc. 35 stitches.
Row 6: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 42 stitches
Row 7: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 5 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 49 stitches
Row 8: ch 2 then *1 dc in next 6 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch.* repeat around. join with first dc. 56 stitches
Row 9: ch 2 then 1 dc in each stitch around. join with first dc.
Row 10-16: repeat row 9. if you would like a longer hat, repeat row 9 until desired length.
Row 17 or last row: ch 1 and sc in each stitch around. join with first sc. fasten off.

    One more question (can you tell I'm working on it right now?) ;-) on Row 10-16, it says repeat Row 8. Does that mean Row 9 or did you keep increasing in the final rows?

    Had decided to make Hats and Scarfs for my family members this year for Christmas Gifts. I counted that I needed to make for 20 members. I started in September, and have 1/3 of them done. With looking to make several different items in a family,so that they are not all alike. I was always looking for other hat patterns. I thank you for coming up with this easier pattern to use my creative talents to make easy changes or the use of alot of different yarns to make this same hat style.
    As time is a factor, I'm so glad for your help with my projects. This pattern is also one that I can teach my student that is just learning about crocheting. Thanks!

    How much yarn did you use to make this? I just made some gloves and I'd love a matching hat, but I don't want to get halfway through and realize I don't have enough yarn (and the craft stores by me stopped selling the brand of yarn I'm using).

    Made two beanies for my son last night while watching the Broncos lose :( - but the hats came out great! Now my husband wants one. I did one in worsted and one in chunky scraps that I striped - I think it is the best! Thanks for great and simple directions.

    Great Pattern! I just finished a baby size beanie using 4 ply worsted weight and a H hook. it will fit a 7 month old baby perfectly. I followed your pattern to a tee only elemnating rows 15 and 16. This is the easiest pattern I have ever used to make a beanie that looks like a beanie. I am planing on making them for my suday school class of 3 and 4 year olds as well as for some older boys in my family for Christmas. It only took me an about an hour.

    Raen - I'm not sure exactly how much yarn is used for one, but I can tell you that I can make three beanies from one skein of Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I think they are 3 oz, and I still have some yarn left over. I hope that helps.

    I am getting ready to strart. I like using 2 strands when making beannies. Will this mess up the pattern. I also love the fact that you posted the number of stitches at the end of each row.

    I don't think using two strands will mess up the pattern at all. It will just make the beanie a little thicker.

    GREAT Pattern. I made one for my 3 yr old granddaughter and modified slightly to fit (went to row 9 after row 7. That wasn't quite big enough, so I added 4 evenly spaced increases in next row then worked even. Love the simplicity and great fit. Well written directions. Am currently making one in sport weight (Vanna's Glamour) with an F hook - I crochet loosely and one more row of increases. Think you have a winner with this pattern. Appreciate you sharing.

    I really appreciate the stitch count at the end of each round. I'm still new to crocheting so I like to count to make sure I didn't screw it up and that I joined on the correct ch. That was sooo helpful! What a great pattern!

    I have been crocheting for several years and have made tons of different things with different skill levels. The beanie always gave me trouble! I could never get the pattern quite right. When my girls announced it is hat day Thursday and they wanted me to make their hats, I knew I wanted one of those with the huge flower on the side. I found this pattern and went to work with blind faith that this would be different. I was so impressed with this pattern! It crochets quickly, the product looks fantastic, and it holds the flowers nicely(thank you glue gun!). I've bookmarked this pattern and will use it over and over again! Thank you so much!

    Thanks Erika! For a smaller beanie try using a smaller hook. I believe I used a size H hook to make one for my son, but you might have to experiment to get the perfect size that you want.

    My Kai, thanks for visiting my blog. Worsted weight is about 10 ply and the hook size I is 5.5mm or J is 6mm. I have a small head so the 5.5mm is what I would use, but I think the bigger hook would make a more common size.

    Cant wait to give the beanie pattern a try. I have to make a couple for a guy friend and the pattern seems much easier to follow then those I have searched on previously to viewing yours.

    I do have a question, I notcied worsted yarn was used such as the Red Heart brand. I love crocheting with the I Love This Yarn brand. I know the texture is a bit softer and less stiff. Can I use I Love This Yarn and achieve the same results or will I need to double strand the yarn?

    @shell34: you would get the same results with Hobby Lobby's yarn. You wouldn't have to double strand unless you wanted it to be thicker. I like working with that yarn too! I just love Hobby Lobby in general, and the sparkly "I love this Yarn!"

    I love this pattern. I made my grandson one that resembles a football by using white yarn in rows 5 & 14 and using brown on the others, then sewed in the "stitch" turned out great!

    Hi Ashley! Thanks for your comment! I haven't tried to make this for a newborn, but I would think using a smaller hook and a lighter weight yarn would do the trick. You could also start out with less stitches in the first round and adjust the pattern from there. I hope this helps! I can't wait to see your finished pieces!

    Just finished....easy project to follow. I added an extra row of hdc and then sc to the end to give it a cleaner finish. It also seems to help hold the shape better. Thanks for the pattern!

    I am just plain embarrassed! I've been crocheting awhile now. I have followed the instructions which are plain as day (thank you!). No matter what I do, I keep ending up with a 3 month or so size of beanie. What in the world am I doing wrong? I'm using Simply Soft yarn and an I hook. HELP! Thanks so much!
