I was so surprised to see in my comments for my Floppy Sun Hat post that someone actually requested to have my pattern! I was happy to remake this hat in order to provide a pattern for you! Please let me know if there are any problems or questions.
You will need two crochet hook sizes, worsted weight yarn, and a stitch marker. I used size K (6.5mm) for the main part and size G (4mm) for the brim.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
pf st = puff stitch
Puff stitch: Yarn over, put the hook through the stitch, yarn over pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, put the hook through the stitch again, yarn over pull up another loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all five loops, ch 1 to secure the stitch.
Main part of hat:
With size K hook, start with a magic circle.
Rnd 1: Make 6 pf st in ring. join.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 1 pf st in the same stitch and each stitch around. join to top of first pf st. (11 pf st)
Rnd 3: ch 1, 1 pf st in same stitch and in each stitch around. join to top of first pf st. (21 pf st)
Rnd 4: ch 2, 1 pf st in next stitch (it will be the stitch in between the pf stitches) *skip next st, pf st in next st* repeat between *s around. join to top of ch 2. (21 pf st)
Rnd 5: ch 2, pf st in same stitch, *ch1, pf st in next stitch in between pf st* repeat around. join in top of 1st pf st. (21 pf st)
Rnd 6: ch 2, pf st in space between pf st, *ch1, pf st in next space between pf st* repeat around. join in top of 1st pf st. (21 pf st)
Rnd 7-12: repeat row 6.
Brim:
The brim is crocheted tightly with a G hook. If you have trouble crocheting tightly, use a size F hook. This is the tedious part and a little hard on the hands. After the first row, you won't be joining anymore, so the brim will be seamless. This is where your stitch marker will come in handy.
Rnd 1: ch 1, *2 sc in space between pf st, 1 sc in top of next pf st* repeat around. join in 1st sc.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch around. mark your last stitch.
Rnd 3: 1 sc in each stitch around. move your marker to this row.
Rnd 4: *1 sc in next 15 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* repeat around. 2 sc in last stitch, move marker.
Rnd 5: *1 sc in next 16 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* repeat around. 2 sc in last stitch, move marker.
Rnd 6: 1 sc in each stitch around, move marker.
Rnd 7: *1 sc in next 17 stitches, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. 2 sc in last stitch, move marker.
Rnd 8: *1 sc in next 18 stitches, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. 2 sc in last stitch, move marker.
Rnd 9: *1 sc in next 19 stitches, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. 2 sc in last stitch, move marker.
Rnd 10: 1 sc in each stitch around, move marker.
Rnd 11: repeat row 10.
You can end here or if you would like your brim wider, continue to make increase rows similar to rnds 7-9. Your next increase rnd will be *1 sc in next 20 st, 2 sc in next st.* Add rnds like 10 and 11 to keep the round shape.
I'd love to see your finished projects! I can even feature them on my blog if you'll allow it. Just email the pics to daperfectmix@gmail.com. If you don't want the pics to be on the blog, just let me know, but I would still like to see your projects.

ReplyDeleteHave you tried crocheting with the raffia? There are some great colors and this hat would be awesome done in the raffia. I made a purse from the raffia and was really happy with how it turned out. I think crochetasylum sells it if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the instructions. You did a great job.
I love this hat! It looks great. It is on my to try list.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet hat! We'd love for you to link up to our Saturday Spotlight party! nv-craftenvy.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteIts awsome this hat, Do u have tutorials on Youtube?
ReplyDeleteI hope!!! Cause I wanted to do this but its hard to me to follow the pattern reading, also cause my english is not good.
Thanks to sharing you knowledge !!
Thank you for sharing. This is just what I wanted to make with some new linen yarn I just purchased.
ReplyDeleteIs it necessary to start with a magic loop? I can't seem to get the hang of that technique....
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica, you don't have to use the magic loop. You can start with a chain 4 and join.
ReplyDeleteThanks to everyone for all the lovely comments!
Hi there. I'm curious about row 3... how did you go from 11 st to 21 without increasing?
ReplyDeleteThanks!! :)
Cute pattern!!
Hi Dean and Erin! You are increasing just like in the previous round. There is a stitch in between the puff stitches. Have you tried it yet? It will probably make more sense if you have it in front of you. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you need any more help.
ReplyDeleteI love your floppy hat and will be making it by spring! Thanks for beig so kind to share your pattern.
ReplyDeleteJust finished it... Love it!!! Added some ribbon and a huge flower with buttons... Can't wait to wear it and show it off.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I'd love to see your finished projects too! I can even feature them on my blog if you'll allow it. Just email the pics to daperfectmix@gmail.com. If you don't want the pics to be on the blog, just let me know.
ReplyDeleteHi its a great hat! Is it ok if I make and sell them at the local farmers martket? I can add a little tag with your name, as the author of the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a cute pattern!
I love this hat! I love the flower addition idea! I'm gonna start right now ;) I'll send you a pick when I'm done!
ReplyDelete@Heather, I don't mind if you sell products from my patterns. I would greatly appreciate be acknowledged for the pattern.
ReplyDelete@Zany, Great! I can't wait to see it!
I love it! Definitely going to give this one a go! Thank you for posting!
ReplyDeleteJust moved to Florida and boy do I need this pattern. Making it this weeeknd - I'll send you the pic. You are the best!!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern. I can't wait to try it. How much yard did you need to make the hat?
ReplyDeleteADORABLE!!!!! BEST floppy brim hat I've ever seen a pattern for!!! :) I just need to know how much yarn you used. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeletei've been looking for a wide brim hat for awhile now, i found a cloth one in a store the other day but the way it was made it has a draw string to tighten it up if needed but the way its made leaves a knot there to poke you in the head all the time and after thinking about it a minute i knew i couldn't put up with that knot for long so i didn't get it, but my mom hates the hat i've been wearing for years now but its so comfortable i just love it lol, anyway when i seen your wide brim hat i thought maybe i finally found something that might make mom happy and be comfortable for me :) lol i figure if i can find something mom likes maybe she will wear one too lol, anyway i just had to tell you i like your hat and i think mom will too :) thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteThe hat is really cute, but I'm confused! In row 1 you have 6 stitches. In row two you say to do 1 stitch in each stitch around and you'll end up with 11 stitches. If you put one stitch in each 1 of 6 stitches, you still only have 6 stitches. Is this a typo, or am I just missing something?
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren, I only counted the puff stitches at the end of each round. There is actually a stitch in between the puff stitches which is where you will see your increases.
ReplyDeleteIf you are wearing perfect hat so you will get a fashionable looks.as above give fantastic Floppy Sun Hat Pattern.I like this hat.
ReplyDeleteSun Hat
SO CUTE! I can't wait to start making this!! Thank you so much for sharing! This is just adorable!
ReplyDeleteI love you! This is the best floppy hat ever, I want to make it with a wider brim, I will send you my finished hat pics soon, love u love the hat, thank u! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you love my pattern!! Lol! I can't wait to see pics.
ReplyDeleteI love the hat I am trying it today I hope it comes out well and thanks for sharing......
ReplyDeleteHi, Love The Hat But Im Having A Hard Time After The 1st Row Because I See It As 12 pf st Instead Of 11. I Have Done It Over And Over And Get The Same Count :/ What Am I Doing Wrong?
ReplyDeleteThanks
I love this hat! It has just the right amount of 'floppy' :) When you are doing your SC's, are you inserting your needle in the top of the stitch, middle or bottom? I'm new to crocheting, so if I make no sense please ignore me :) But from the few projects I've tried, that changes the look and I want mine to look just like your awesome hat! thanks!!!
ReplyDeletefor the main part of the hat, what do you mean when you say 'join' at the end of each row?
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the comments/questions. I am currently working on a video for this pattern. The first part should be done by the end of this week. Thanks again, and come back soon!
ReplyDeletesorry to bother, but whats the name of the video
ReplyDeleteThe video is not yet complete. I will post it here when it is finished. It will probably be called Floppy Sun Hat Pattern.
ReplyDeletethanks, can't wait to watch it!
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for a hat pattern like this that will allow my head to breathe but still shade my eyes! Thank you! I've already got my cotton yarn ready and will start this today.
ReplyDeleteLove love love this!! I have made like 10 of them for all my family!! It's just perfect! I modified it a little and made a smaller version for my daughter!! Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
I tried to leave a comment on your you tube page but it doesn't look like it's activated yet, anyhow this sun hat is just gorgeous. I'm going to start it tonite!!! Thanks so much for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteDee
Cute hat. I am making it for a 1 and 4 yr old but reducing yarn weight and hook size for infant. Do you have a pattern for the flower on the yellow floppy hat in one of the pictures posted on Ravelry for this pattern?
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteSorry, I can't publish the pattern for the flower. It's from the book “Crocheting School: A Complete Course” by Inc. Sterling Publishing Co. I first borrowed the book from the library then ended up ordering a copy from Amazon. Maybe you can find it in your local library.
I have tried attempting your hat twice already and for some reason this puff stitch is kicking my butt. this is only my first really project. i just noticed you had videos so i am going to watch those and try to do it from that.
ReplyDeletehi
ReplyDeletei was watching the videos and i noticed on the first magic ring with the six puff stitches it looked like you were ch1 between the puff stitches.... is that right?
and on round 2 are you going through the rear stitch or both stitches?
thanks
Yes, it feels like a ch1 between the puff stitches, but it's actually part of the puff stitch. so when you get to row 5 and 6 it will feel like you are chaining 2 in between your puff stitches. You will eith go through both loops per stitch or in the space between puff stitches in the later rounds. Thanks for your questions!
ReplyDeleteI participated in a secret swap on a crochet site that I'm on and we received this hat for my daughter. I'm in love with it!! She did an amazing job! I asked right away where she found this pattern. Thank you so much for posting this! My daughter has asked me to make her some in other colors and I plan to make some for Easter gifts and for a craft show coming up next month. I can't wait to get home and try it.
ReplyDeleteSomeone asked how much yarn did you use to make the hat? Couldn't find an answer to that.
ReplyDeleteOh, I thought I answered that here, but it was on Ravelry. Here was my comment on Ravelry: It takes more than one 2.5 oz (approx 120 yds) skein of Peaches & Creme cotton but less than two. I was actually able to make a small beanie with the leftover skein. I hope that helps. Sorry I don't have a more specific answer.
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern! Thanks so much for sharing it. I linked to it on my blog this morning. :)
ReplyDeleteI would to make this hat but it is too much to copy by hand and it is too much paper to waste on all the comments. If you could make the pattern available by itself I would try to make the hat. I have 5GGD's who would love it. Patsy
ReplyDeleteThanks for this pattern! I am going to Florida next month and have been looking at different hats to wear on the beach. Unfortunately, all the hats in the stores are too small for my large head. :( I think something like this will be perfect as I can make it just my size!
ReplyDeleteMy hats keep are baby hats. I was making it for myself. My count comes out correct. I watched the video and tried again and I have two baby hats. I am not sure where I am going wrong. sybilcole@ymail.com thanks
ReplyDeleteI figured it out yeah now Ivan make a baby hat and an adult hat.
DeleteAmazing pattern. I was able to follow it and I am a "knitter". The videos are amazing. I made this hat in the Bernat Susan G. Komen cotton yarn as a test pattern. Am not a fan of Bernat cotton, so am going to make it again in a Cleo yellow yarn. Thank you so much for this pattern and the videos. <3
ReplyDeleteOh this is an awesome pattern! I have been searching all over for fairly simple pattern for an adult size sun hat! My only question: What is the finished dimensions of the hat? I will also post pictures after I get one made up!
ReplyDeleteGASP!!! I LOVE this hat!! You are amazing and very kind to share.
ReplyDeleteThank you EmmaRose
I am also ending up with a very small hat, and somehow I got 23 puff stitches per round instead of 21. I read through the comments and I think I'm missing the chain one before each puff stitch (feels like chain two after each one)starting at round 5, so I think that's my problem. I love this hat, and will keep trying. Hopefully I can get it right one of these times!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the kind words!
ReplyDeletelb91011, have you tried following the video? Maybe that will help.
Love the pattern. Any suggestions on how to make a slightly larger one? Thinking of throwing in an extra puff stitch in one or two rounds but not sure how that would affect the brim. Also, if I put a finished hat up for sale, how would you like to be credited? I was thinking "Thanks to daperfectmix for the great pattern"
ReplyDeleteI love the hat but it seems a little small, so I'm thinking on adding 8 puff stitches instead of 6. Let me know if I'm correct or not. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Marissa,
ReplyDeleteStarting with 8 puff stitches would be good to make it bigger, also going up in hook size would help. I hope it comes out perfect for you!
For those having problems, make sure you're doing the puff stitch according to her directions! At the end of her puff stitch, she has you doing ch 1! I had problems until I realized that.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's absolutely right. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan you make a knitting pattern of this? I can't do crochet and dont know how to convert it
ReplyDeleteI really wish I could make a knitting pattern for this hat. Unfortunately I haven't spent too much time in the world of knitting to be able to do that. One day I will be proficient at both, but for now I can only crochet. Maybe the video can help? Also feel free to email me with any questions you have if you decide to try. daperfectmix@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi There, I am trying out this beautiful pattern today and have also had the problem of ending up with 12 puff stitches on the second round and I watched the video but it looks like you didn't make a puff into the last ch1, is it correct to just skip that last stitch? Thanks for the help!
ReplyDelete-Angela
This is a gorgeous hat! And bonus...my walmart is selling a cone of yellow peaches and cream for $5...exactly what I wanted for my sun hat!
ReplyDeleteI love this Pattern! Ty so much for posting it. I have been looking for a sun hat to make for myself for this summer.I am almost finished, working on the brim now. Will definitely have to send u a picture o the finished product! Again thank you or sharing!
ReplyDeleteI am loving this pattern. It took me 3 restarts to get it right, but I finally did. It kept coming out tiny until I realized that I needed 2 chains between each puff. Now it is perfect! I am working on the brim now and I will send you a picture as soon as it is finished.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your great pattern!
I'm glad you like it! I can't wait to see the finished products!
ReplyDeleteVery lovely pattern. But can you tell me what size (in mm) hook K and hook G are ? Cause here I have hook in sizes : 1 mm, 1.5 mm, etc
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind respons
Hello Evi,
ReplyDeleteSize K = 6.5mm
Size G = 4.25mm
Thanks for visiting!
I am so happy that you have included how to videos. I am just learning how to crochet and they are going to be a great help!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIvie
I'm a melanoma patient and on chemo so I can not be exposed to the sun. this hat will be great! I'm trying to use my stash - can you tell me about how much yarn this pattern needs? Karen
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteI'm not exactly sure, but I would say it will take approximately 200 yards, maybe less. I use 2 skeins of Peaches & Creme Cotton which is 2.5 oz (approx 120 yds) per skein. It doesn't take both skeins so that's why I said about 200.
Sorry I guess I missed that! The pattern also said ww yarn but it's good to know you made one with cotton. Thanks for the quick answer!
ReplyDeleteWonderful pattern! It was featured in an MNE Crafts round-up!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mnecrafts.com/2014/06/summer-beanies-10-free-patterns.html
I am working on this hat right now at Round 8. My wrist hurts! :D You mention to use hook G and crochet tight, with F if can't crochet it tight. So just in case, I used crochet hook F and made it too tight I guess.... now at Round 8, I only have about 1.5" of brim.... Guess I'll have a long night to go. What is the width of your brim?
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy! I think my brim came out to be a little over 2 inches. I'm sorry, that it's hurting your wrists. It doesn't have to be super tight, but I've noticed that the tighter it is, the stiffer and stays the way you shape it.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for EXACTLY this hat. Here in Arkansas the summers are very hot & humid, so having something on my head is not ideal. But keeping the sun off my face is essential. You have combined the perfect blend of airy hat and full coverage brim. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteCan I know this is for adult size or for a child? I need to make one for age 5 girl.
ReplyDeleteIt's for an adult, but you can modify by using a lighter weight yarn and a smaller hook.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletehi, i would like to do this hat knitted not in crochet as i don´t know how to crochet now, do you have a pattern on how to make it knitted?? thanks, laura.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura! Unfortunately, I do not have a knitting pattern for this hat. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteIDK What in the world I am doing wrong but when I get to the second round I am getting more than 11 stitches. Will it affect the hat to have more than you call for?
ReplyDeleteHi Mandi, if you're counting the chain in between, you will end up with twice as many stitches. The 11 count is only counting the puff stitches. I hope this helps. The video might be helpful too if you haven't seen it yet.
DeleteI really love this hat! I'm looking forward to trying it, but I'll admit to being a little nervous because I've only been crocheting for a couple of years and I haven't tried the puff stitch yet...I'll definitely try checking out the youtube videos. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I have tried the hat before and gotten smaller versions. I am wanting to watch the video, but cannot seem to find it. Where is the video located? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe video can be found at this link: https://youtu.be/OxxFjdY2b_w
ReplyDeletei wonder why mine came out too small? been trying many times. using worsted cotton, 10 ply. Pls help.
ReplyDeleteHi! I know some people were missing the extra chain one at the end of each puff stitch. Here's my puff stitch directions:
ReplyDelete"Puff stitch: Yarn over, put the hook through the stitch, yarn over pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, put the hook through the stitch again, yarn over pull up another loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all five loops, ch 1 to secure the stitch."
If that doesn't help, maybe you could try a larger hook. Have you looked at the video to see if you were doing anything different? I hope this helps. Please let me know if you still need help. Thanks for emailing!
Michelle
This is really beautiful hat..
ReplyDeleteI will surely try this hat for my daughter. :)
Hi. Love the hat. To make the brim bigger. You say increase sc 20...then do row 10 to keep the brim round. Can u explain what u mean cuz i want my brim really really big but keep the shape like yours. Thank u
ReplyDeleteHi, I don't think I'm getting the right stitch count on the brim. Can you tell me how many I'm supposed to have at the end of round 3 on the brim? I'm getting 126 sc but it doesn't seem to tie in with the number of stitches on round 4. i.e. sc 15 times and 2 sc on 16th stitch, which means it should be multiples of 16 plus 1, so I should have 129 stitches?
ReplyDeleteHi Imee. The stitch count on the brim is not really important, not to mention it's just too many to keep track of. The important part is how it looks. The more you increase, the floppier the brim will be. To control the floppiness, that is the purpose of the rounds of sc without increasing. But if you do too many of those rounds, the brim will begin to curve. Sometimes you have to experiment to get it just the way you like it. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I kinda came up with the same conclusion while thinking about it. I suppose as long as I increase consistently it should work out fine.
DeleteI was going to make this hat but already on the second row it doesn't make sense. You went from 6 stitches to 11 but don't mention any increases....I really want to make this but if there are mistakes that early in the pattern I'm afraid to commit my time to it.
ReplyDeleteHello. Yes all the rows in the beginning increase to form a round shape. Otherwise your head will never fit! I guess I didn't think it was necessary to say, but I will have a look at the pattern to see if it needs to be updated. Have you tried to follow the video? Maybe that will help make more sense of the pattern. I do understand when something in a pattern doesn't click right away. It makes it frustrating instead of fun. Sometimes I find if I come back to a pattern later it somehow all falls together in an aha moment. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
ReplyDeleteI love the hat but wish there was a knitting pattern for it.
ReplyDeleteI really like this hat. Can it be made in cotton yarn? Would the hooks have to be larger or smaller?
ReplyDeleteI’m Ann from Arkansas. I made this hat for my Aunt for Easter and she loves it; she wears it for gardening. I made the brim a bit larger and it’s really cute!!! I’ve since made 2 more for other friends who love to work out in the yard. GREAT PATTERN!!! Very simple and super comfy!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Ann from Arkansas! I'm so happy you're enjoying the pattern!
ReplyDeleteThis hat is looking very good and comfortable too.
ReplyDeleteThis information was helpful for me.
ReplyDeleteThis blog was awesome i really like that.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThis site was lit :)
So I am trying to make this and I am assuming round 6 is where u get the diameter of what size hat this will make? If so since u don’t indicate a gauge do u have any idea what size your circle is after round 6. I am only getting 5 inches which will only make about about the size of a bag hat if I am right about making hats. I really like this one and really want to make it but just not sure if it’s going to be anywhere close enough to an adult size. Thank you,
ReplyDeleteWith worsted weight yarn and a K size hook (6.5mm), I am getting a diameter measurement of 6.5 inches after round 6. In round 5 it will feel like you are chaining 2 in between stitches because of the chain at the top of the puff stitch. This was one of the first patterns I've written so I appologize for any confusion. If you want to make the hat larger, I would suggest starting with 7 or 8 puff stitches or going up in hook size. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!!! That helps tremendously. I was using a lighter weight cotton so i am going to try it with the cotton yarn you have recommended and hopefully that will help. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your patterns Michele ! living here in Metro Atlanta, Ga. this hat is Great when under hot sun. the only thing I will try is to change the rim a little from Floppy when sunny to being able to roll the rim & wear on cloudy days. Anna Italia
