Classic Cloche Pattern

Do you remember my post about my Classic Cloche? Well, someone left a comment and asked for the pattern. Unfortunately, I did not write the pattern down as I made it. (That's not the first time for that. Maybe I'll learn my lesson this time.) I sold the hat so all I had were pictures to re-create from. I think it came out pretty close, if not the same.

Materials:
  • Size I crochet hook
  • 4ply worsted weight yarn
Abbreviations:
  • ch = chain
  • ea = each
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • st = stitch
  • rep = repeat
  • rnd = round
Instructions:

Start with a magic circle, ch 1
Rnd 1: 7 hdc in ring, join with a slip stitch(7hdc)
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in ea st around, join (14hdc)
Rnd 3: ch 1, *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (21hdc)
Rnd 4: ch 1, *1 hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (28hdc)
Rnd 5: ch 1, *1 hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (35hdc)
Rnd 6: ch 1, *1 hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (42hdc)
Rnd 7: ch 1, *1 hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (49hdc)
Rnd 8: ch 1, *1 hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join (56hdc)
Rnd 9: ch 1, 1 hdc in ea st around, join (56hdc)
Rnd 10-17 : rep Rnd 9 (for a longer or shorter hat do more or less rows)
Rnd 18: ch 1, in back loops only, *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* rep around, join
Rnd 19: ch 1, 1 hdc in ea st around, join.
Rnd 20-21: rep Rnd 19, fasten off.

Adornment:
You can adorn your cloche with strands of yarn or crocheted flowers or anything you want, really. Here are examples of how I did it with the strands.  It's actually the yarn I had left over.

Here is a picture of my first Classic Cloche if you missed that post:
I don't remember how much yarn it was, but i just folded them evenly, wrapped it around the hat and tied it in a knot. Then I twisted the yarn around itself to make the shape and I secured the yarn with fabric glue. I didn't glue it to the hat itself because I wanted the adornment to be removable.
You could also let the strands hang down for a different look. These strands came out to be about 3 feet long. I counted 8 strands, but I didn't cut the yarn, it's just folded. You can play with it and come up with something new.

I love seeing finished products from my patterns. If you want to be featured on my blog with your finished items, just shoot me an email. If you don't want to be featured but still want to send me pics, that's great too! Just let me know in the email if you want me to post your pics or not.

  26. I just finished mine, and came up beautiful. It was very easy to crochet, but I had a hard time making the adornment (the strand didn't behaved, and I don´t like glue). So I just made a braid out of 3 strands of yarn, and made a crochet button. I'll send you a picture. One more thing, I increased to 60 stitches at rows 16 and 17 because it was fitting too tight, but it came out well. Thanks!

  29. So I started to make this hat but it was so tiny everyone thought I was making a baby hat. HELP???!!! I've been told that I crochet extremely tight. I've tried to create looser stitches but to no avail. I've only just started to read patterns within the last week so I wouldn't have any clue as to how to modify the pattern to make it work. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you

  30. Hi Elaina! What kind of yarn are you using? To make it bigger, you can use a bigger hook, a heavier yarn, or both. You could also increase the first rounds number of stitches and adjust the pattern from there. I hope that helps!

  31. I'm having difficult understand what exact I am supposed to repeat in round 3.. No matter how I seem to do it I can not make the round come out to be 21 hdc. I keep cpmomg io shout of the round. Is the repeated pattern 1hd 2hd 1hec 2hdc all the way around or something else? Please help I'm trying to make this hat on a time crunch. Thanks!
    -Rose

  32. Hello Rosie,

Yes, for round 3 you will first make your chain 1, then repeat 1 hdc then 2 hdc all the way around. That will make an increase of 7, which should come out to 21. If you need more help, email me at daperfectmix@gmail.com

  34. I am just about to try your pattern but have a quick question. I love what appears to be a little more of a brim ion the maroon colired hat over the one on the gray....how do I get that " little more" brim? Also, I am making it for me 4 year old Grandaughter....should the size be right with this pattern or will I need to change something? Please email. tashafer@yahoo.com. Thanks!

  35. I found your cloche pattern when I decided I had to make a red, white, and blue hat for President Obama's second Inauguration. I wanted to crochet the Obama logo starting out and then make the rest white except for a red, white, and blue brim. I ended up making the red stripes of the Obama logo with red marker--kind of primitive but easier than trying to crochet them in--and I added a three-strand drawstring between the hat and the brim which I just tied in a bow so I could adjust it to keep the hat tight over my ears. I used Sugar 'n Cream red, white, and blue cotton yarn and just changed colors whenever I had to. I then pinned all my Obama pins on the white part of the hat and started a matching scarf which I worked on while waiting in the crowd and didn't finish till I got home. I got many compliments on the hat, even though it isn't quite as elegant as yours, and I will save it forever. Thanks for such a great pattern. I will email you pictures but there are more in my Facebook photo album which anyone can see: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4878296748363.2176732.1025822061&type=3

  40. Thanks so much for the pattern! I've made two for my niece today. I love that the brim position and accessory placement can totally change the look of the hat. She'll have two hats that are the same pattern but still quite different. I can't wait to see her in them! Love it. :-) Thanks!

  45. I REALLY love this pattern, thank you! I've made 3 hats so far. Two were done just as written and one I adjusted the last 2 rows as my mother-in-law wanted a bit more brim... She LOVED it!

  48. Love your pattern and I can't wait to try it. I have some thicker yarns on hand,so I was wondering if you could give me some specifics on the yarn you used.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I used a worsted weight yarn. If you use a thicker yarn you will most likely get a larger hat which may be a good thing since some have said that this hat is a little on the small side.

  51. This pattern is awesome for cancer patients. I make them up and take them in to our local cancer center.

  52. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern. I will try to make this hat soon so it can be ready for fall.

  53. Did anyone block the brim of the hat? I was thinking of using a fabric stiffener, any thoughts on that?

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's a good idea, Susie! Then the brim won't be so floppy. It will stay where you put it. Let us know how it turns out.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Are all the rounds joined with a slip stitch where it says to join

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes, join with a slip stich for all joins.

  58. What do u slip stich with, a needle?

    ReplyDelete
  59. You slip stitch with your crochet hook. When you come to the end of a round, insert your hook into the first stitch of the round, yarn over, pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook.
